Without a doubt, they hook up great on ice and snow. But if you ride on bare patches of trail with exposed rocks, you are likley to loose studs. The rubber is fairly soft and the studs pull out easy. Riding on the road is fine.

I have the Nokian 296's (bought last year), this is one great tire. Because of the lack of snow here in central maine this winter, the ice riding was excellent. I put on 160 miles of glass smooth ice riding on Great Pond this year. It's quite the rush to be doing 20-25 mph on polished ice and feeling very confidant in the bite of the tires. I highly recommend them.

I ride packed snowmobile trails that often ice out. This is my first season with studs. All expert reviews recommended this tire. So I made the investment. I am not disappointed. I am riding up iced trails on Mount Kearsarge in Warner, and on frozen ponds. I even towed my son today, on a pond, while he was on skis. I am doing stuff unimaginable prior to the Nokians. However, the tires, when pushed on turns, may slip. Further, there is a learning curve, so don't throw caution to the wind.

Bought these tires after spending a considerable amount of time on my butt trail riding recently because of the lack of snow and abundance of ice! These tires work great at lowering the pucker-factor on rides with ice. These aren't James Bond-esq tires allowing you to climb sheer walls while shooting rockets from you ear lobes but they will allow you to stay upright when ice sneaks up on you.
